Episode 5 : MF

Please read the notes behind the cut, it's long but you'll learn many things about japanese music ! (and it took me hours to write it XD)

This episode is about music and there are many references to 80's & 90's bands and artists.
In Japan, they love to abbreviate band's name especially when they're long. Kousuke's band is Brain Busters (ブレーン・バスターズ). The contracted form is ブレバス, I decide to translate it as Brebus in romaji. It's not really pretty...

Perfume - Chocolate disco :

Band boom : From the middle of the 80's, it's called the second Band Boom in Japan (the first was in the end of the 70's). The first bands were BOØWY, Hound dog and Rebecca. Then the "four heavenly kings" reigned over Japan : The blue hearts, Unicorn, The boom and Jun Sky Walker(s). In 1991, 510 bands got their major debut !

Ikasu band Tengoku (aka IkaTen) : The "battle of the bands"-style show aired on TBS from 1989 to 1991, featured up-and-coming amateurs and was the first introduction of straight-ahead rock & roll to Japanese TV. Bands are judged by an established jury and the winner is called "Ika King".

Yoshida Ken : composer, arranger & music producer. Till march 1990, he was a jury's member in IkaTen and known to be very severe with the bands saying with like "What was that ?" "How did this band even manage to get through preliminary !" and "Stop music please". But there were times when he apologized for his cold attitude.

Chage & aska : japanese popular music duo formed in 1979. To anime fans, their name is associated with the short movie On your mark produced by Ghibli. In this episode, Kogure is talking about the duo because in their Yah yah yah song, they put their arms in the air while singing.
On your mark :
Yah yah yah :
Say yes :

Bakufu Slump - Runner : the song Tsuyoshi is "singing" in the vegetable shop. It's a really famous song released in October 1988.

Gian (Doraemon) : Takeshi, usually known by the nickname "Gian" (ジャイアン) from English word "giant", is the big, strong, and quick-tempered local bully. He is known for his confidence in his terrible singing voice, though he considers himself a great singer.

BOØWY : famous japanese band in the 80's, they split in 1988. The 1990s "band movement" in Japan was credited to Boøwy as they popularized the formation of musical groups. Two of their members, Hotei Tomokasu and Himuro Kousuke, are having successful solo career.
Marionette :
Only you :

Unicorn : rock band, formed in 1986, split in 1993 and reunited in 2009.
Hataraku Otoko :
Daimewaku :
Subarashii hibi :

Moritaka Chisato : idol who started her career in 1987. She differed from many other female Idol Singers in Japan in that she wrote her own lyrics and some music for her albums.
17 sai :

Princess princess (aka Puripuri) : poprock girl band active from 1983 to 1996.
